An elderly man, gaunt and grizzled, climbed the stairs beside me. His faded jeans were cinched together at his waist. A flannel shirt, faded soft, was tucked neatly into his waistband. His leathery skin told me he\u2019d spent years in the sun, and his Army veteran cap told me he\u2019d spent years serving our country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His eyes were down, focused on the stairs. \u201cI\u2019ve walked up and down these eleven steps thirty-one times. But today\u2019s the last day.\u201d He glanced at the couple to his left, and then at me. \u201cShe\u2019s gone home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was hustling up the stairs, in a hurry to visit my dad, who\u2019d been in ICU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I felt the Spirit\u2019s nudge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Slow down.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I did\u2014so quickly that the woman climbing the stairs behind me swerved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s wonderful,\u201d I said, matching my steps to his as we entered the atrium. \u201cThat she\u2019s going home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&nbsp;<em>is&nbsp;<\/em>wonderful,\u201d he said. \u201cFor her.\u201d He took a breath, winded perhaps from the climb. \u201cBut not for me.\u201d He paused. \u201cSixty-two years we were married.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His words settled between us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, sir.\u201d I said. \u201cI am so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I stopped, and he did too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMay I pray for you?\u201d I asked, and he nodded, then took off his hat.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPlease do. I shore need it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTell me your name\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLeroy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd what was your wife\u2019s name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMabel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid she know Jesus, Mr. Leroy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>For the first time, a hint of a smile tugged at his lips.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cKnow Him?\u201d he said. \u201cShe loved Him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I placed my hand on his shoulder. Through the flannel, I could feel the rounded curves of his bones. We bowed our heads as people swirled around us and the automatic doors swooshed open and shut. In a holy hush, the Spirit of God drew close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFather, thank you for giving Mr. Leroy and Mrs. Mabel sixty-two years together. Thank you that she didn\u2019t just know you, she loved You. We know she\u2019s in your presence today, and this is powerful comfort. Thank you for Mr. Leroy\u2019s faithfulness to care for his wife all the days of her life. Now, Lord, please care for him. Comfort him as he grieves, give him strength and courage to face each day. Draw ever closer to him and meet his every need according to your riches in glory. Help him know he\u2019s not alone. In the strong name of Jesus I ask, amen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAmen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I looked into his eyes, now moist around the edges and gave his shoulder a gentle squeeze. Another small smile, and we parted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alone in the elevator, I drew a shaky breath. \u201cThank you, Father,\u201d I whispered to the ceiling. The tears I\u2019d blinked back spilled from the corners of my eyes. \u201cThank you for the hope of the resurrection. For the comfort of your Spirit. And for Jesus, who made it possible for us to live forever\u2014with each other and with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Jesus said to her, \u201cI am the resurrection and the life.
