I\u2019d cooked all day, and now it was time to clean up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-CSqKWQfsgSw\/WE4m_tUvRFI\/AAAAAAAAKwI\/xolBKDQTwbsisisrV8PXngypo_dEheMowCLcB\/s1600\/dirty%2Bdishes1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-CSqKWQfsgSw\/WE4m_tUvRFI\/AAAAAAAAKwI\/xolBKDQTwbsisisrV8PXngypo_dEheMowCLcB\/s320\/dirty%2Bdishes1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except the sink wouldn&#8217;t drain<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While we tried to locate a plumber to tackle the clog, Pioneer Woman kicked in. I hauled my dirty dishes to the bathroom. On my hands and knees, I scoured the bathtub, then scrubbed the dishes. A blast from the shower head rinsed the soapy pile.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Christmas wasn\u2019t perfect that year.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another year, I awakened on Christmas morning with the worst case of vertigo I\u2019ve ever had. If I moved my eyes too quickly, my head spun. If I moved my body too quickly, my stomach heaved. And the smell of our family\u2019s traditional holiday feast? I sequestered myself in the living room to get away from it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Christmas wasn\u2019t perfect that year, either.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there was the year I had to work on Christmas Eve. When I\u2019d finally dismissed my last patient and said Merry Christmas to my coworkers, I jumped into my car, eager to begin the festivities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe a little too eager.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I headed home, I took a curve too quickly. A car, coming from the other direction, drove dangerously close to the center line. I jerked the steering wheel to the right, over corrected, and hit the curb\u2014hard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Please don&#8217;t be flat. Please don&#8217;t be flat<\/em>. Hoping against hope, I peered around the front of the car to check my tire.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flat as my hair after a rainstorm. Flat as a frog on an interstate. Flat as my spirits when I realized I\u2019d be getting a tire for Christmas instead of something much more fun.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>That Christmas wasn\u2019t perfect, either.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The longer I live, the more I realize perfect Christmases only appear in Hallmark movies.<strong>&nbsp;No surprise, really, because real Christmases are never perfect.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Consider the first one\u2014now that was one for the history books.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mary, who could have been as young as 14, was 9-months pregnant. Out-of-wedlock pregnant, no less.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then came the census, which meant she and Joseph had to leave home and travel to Bethlehem. The journey would take four days if Mary rode a donkey, seven days if she walked. When I was pregnant, I could barely walk to the mailbox, let alone 70 miles\u2014with or without a donkey.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, when Mary and Joseph finally arrived, they found no lodging. No Ramada Inn. No Motel Six. Not even a Good Sam Campground.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And then her labor began<\/strong>. Maybe Joseph was able to find a midwife, maybe not. Either way, he was a key player in his wife\u2019s delivery. Think on that for a moment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then she gave birth in a stable. Read that again.&nbsp;<em>She gave birth in a stable<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And laid her newborn baby in a&nbsp;<em>feeding trough<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But it still wasn\u2019t over.<\/strong>&nbsp;Just as the little family was falling into an exhausted sleep, they heard a rustling at the door. Then voices. Then louder voices. As Joseph peered out into the darkness, he saw a motley band of shepherds babbling about lights, and angels, and a heavenly message.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey won\u2019t leave until they see the baby,\u201d he told his bewildered wife. \u201cThey say they\u2019ve looked in every manger in Bethlehem.\u201d&nbsp;<br><strong><br><\/strong><strong>When I think about it, I realize how<em>&nbsp;im<\/em>perfect Mary\u2019s Christmas was. But it didn\u2019t matter, because Jesus was there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year you may be hoping for a perfect Christmas. Or you may already know you have no chance of one. Ill health, strained finances, or a broken relationship is making you struggle. Maybe you\u2019re facing your first holiday without a loved one, or battling depression, discouragement, or despair.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it\u2019s time to change the channel on our Hallmark expectations of what Christmas is supposed to look like.&nbsp;<strong>Maybe Christmas doesn\u2019t have to look \u201cperfect\u201d to be special.&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-hYmMoNdqaGw\/WE4ky_zO6WI\/AAAAAAAAKv4\/14tDeufdMaUVS6UgDsKzGvbDZHsv_RR_gCLcB\/s1600\/How%2Bto%2BHave%2Ba%2BPerfect%2BChristmas.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This holiday season, let\u2019s ask God to give us the grace to follow Mary\u2019s example. Let\u2019s treasure the events of Christmas and ponder them in our hearts. Let\u2019s give thanks for the journey, the stable, and the manger. And let\u2019s glorify and praise God for all we\u2019ve seen and heard, spreading the word to everyone we meet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m hoping for a clogged-drain-vertigo-flat-tire-free Christmas this year. Maybe it will happen. Maybe it won\u2019t.
